History of Southport Reserves

Southport have had a reserve team intermittently since their formation. During their Football League days they played mainly in the Lancashire Combination and Lancashire Football League. The late eighties saw their reserve team disbanded through lack of support despite finishing third under manager Barry Hedley in 1985 in the Lancashire League. This was an era when the league included Manchester United and Liverpool.

With the first team reaching the Conference in 1993 the reserve team was reformed playing in the Northwest Alliance League. Southport always performed well winning both the championship and cup. In 1998 they joined the Lancashire league finishing seventh in their first season and, under manager Mike Vaughan, won the league and cup in 2000.

The autumn of 2000 saw a change in reserve policy. Stephen Bleasdale, who brought to the club an influx of younger players from the Liverpool FACE programme, replaced Mike Vaughan. Despite an early 10-1 defeat at Morecambe, the new young Reserve team then put together a run of thirteen straight victories to finish a very creditable 3rd in the League.

The following season Steve left to join Mark Wright at Chester and Tony Murphy took over. The team finished justabove mid table, but Tony's infectious enthusiasm saw the youngsters start the following season with an away friendly against Dublin City, the squad therefore becoming the first Southport team to leave the United Kingdom.

Southport had now formed their own PASE programme comprising 24 (later 48) students aged 16, 17 and 18 based in the local two colleges who complete their A levels whilst receiving 13 hours of EUFA 'A' coaching during the week. The youngsters formed the backbone of a team that finished runners-up in 2003.

More recently, PASE coach Tony Rodwell has taken over the reigns, and last season guided a team of average age only eighteen to seventh place in the League. The youngsters also reached the semi-final of the Cup, having played through from the Preliminary round.
